Welcome to Population Sciences at Duke. Duke is an exciting place to explore the population sciences. You have the chance to train with top population scientists with a wide set of diciplinary backgrounds and a wider set of research interests. DuPRI students are currently gaining an intense research experience here in the U.S. and throughout the world. Several important international data collection efforts are lead by Duke faculty in China, India, Indonesia, Mexico and other areas of the world and research opportunities abound. Our students have the opportunity to obtain cutting edge empirical skills as well as to develop deep substantive knowledge in important areas of the population sciences; and we offer training that allows you to integrate insights from biology, economics, psychology and sociology into your own research program. Funding
DuPRI is proud to have been awarded a T32 training grant from the National Institutes of Aging in the social, medical, and economic demography of aging. The purpose of this predoctoral and postdoctoral research training program is to provide rigorous training to scholars pursuing a reseach agenda in aging. The program focuses on five substantive areas: a) biodemography, including indices and models of aging, vitality, and frailty, b) health disparities (by race/ethnicity, sex, socioeconomic status) among the elderly; c) international comparative studies of the health of aging populations in both developed and developing countries; d) important life course transitions (e.g., family changes, work and retirement, morbidity and disability) that relate to the health and well-being of aging persons; and e) the economics of aging. The T32 supports five predoctoral fellows and two postdoctoral fellows giving students the support needed to take interdiciplinary coursework, to be engaged in mentored research and to protect their time to pursue their own research goals.Explore the Benefits
DuPRI Population Sciences Workshop: held each Thursday from 3:30 - 5:00 PM, the Population SciencesWorkshop (DuPRI Seminar Series) invites world-class population scientists to present state-of-the-art research. The workshop is open to all DuPRI graduate students who are full participants. The Population Association of America Conference: an important part of any population researcher's professional development is attending and presenting work at the PAA. DuPRI will help students prepare for presentations and poster sessions at the PAA. In conjunction with the Graduate School and home departments, DuPRI supports travel to the Annual PAA meetings.
